Where Do Silverfish Come From? Why Are They In My House?
If you notice silverfish in your house all the suddenly, you might wondering, “Where do silverfish come from?” There are actually many reasons that silverfish have come into your home. Some of these can be taken care of fairly easily.
Water
There is a water source in your home the silverfish are using. This could be standing water in a basement. This might be a leaky pipe or drain somewhere in the house. You might have dishes with standing water in the sink. Take care of your water problems as best as possible.
Humidity can be another water problem. If a room in the house is too humid, silverfish will find their way there.
Food
Silverfish eat plants, book bindings, wallpaper glue, starches like your cereal, and clothing. For most houses this is in abundance.
Store books and clothing in sealed containers and not cardboard boxes.
Put your cereal or cereal boxes inside sealed containers so silverfish won’t get into it.
If you have peeling wallpaper problems, consider removing the wallpaper or repairing it.
Cracks
If they made it into the home, there has to be a crack somewhere that let them in. Inspect around your pipes and drains because this is the most obviously place. Seal any cracks that you might notice in the house especially around windows to prevent pest problems.
