What is Diatomaceous Earth Used for? Uses for Diatomaceous Earth
What is diatomaceous earth used for?
There is a pool grade version of this and a food grade. The pool grade version of diatomaceous earth is used for pool filters and it’s fairly toxic. This focuses on the food grade version of diatomaceous earth.
On ranches this product is mixed in with animal food. The reason is that it will treat pest problems in the food and inside the animal as well. Certain mixes work differently with different types of animals.
One of the best uses of diatomaceous earth is for pest control.
The reason that this works so well against pests is because it’s impossible for pests to become immune to the effects of diatomaceous earth.
Since it’s a powder or dust and not a chemical there is no way a pest can come in contact with it and not be effected. What happens is that this powder is actually a very small crystalline object that will actually cut the pest. If a pest comes in too much contact with it, they will become dehydrated and die.
What’s nice about diatomaceous earth compared to other pest control products is that it’s cheaper per pound than almost anything else. It is about $1 per pound making a larger 25 pound bag go along way for home and yard pest control.
Generally you just sprinkle this into your yard or garden. You can even sprinkle it around the house and onto the carpet vacuuming it up later for indoor pests. A garden duster will make this process a bit easier as it spread out the powder evenly.
If you are used to using chemicals, poisons, and toxins, try changing it up and trying some diatomaceous earth.
