When deer get into your yard they are generally looking for something to eat. While some of the time this might not matter to you some have flowers and vegetable gardens they have worked hard with that they don’t want to be eaten by deer.

There are a wide variety of deer repellents on the market but do electronic deer repellents really work?

What is good about electronic repellents?

The positive part of electronic repellents are that you don’t have to reapply the repellent over and over and you don’t have to put up with the raunchy odors in your yard. The same ones that deer find awful you will too.

Some electronic deer repellents actually give a shock to the deer in attempts to scare off the deer. While this is fairly effective, some find it cruel and in some areas you need special permission to use this type of device. It’s not really the best choice.

Other electronic repellents use ultrasonic sound to repell the deer. These work fairly well but if you have pets like dogs this will end up annoying your pets.

The best option are motion activated sprinklers. These are devices that simply shoot a small burst of water towards the deer when it gets within range scaring them off. Compared to an electric shock, this is a much more humane method in dealing with deer in your yard and garden.

Want to find out which is the best motion activated sprinkler?

So deer are giving your backyard and/or garden a problem and you are looking for a homemade deer repellent solution. But what exactly do you use and what can you make?

One almost “old wives tale” is that deer don’t like loud noises. So some have tried a method of leaving on a radio for days at a time. It appears to work but once the deer realizes there is no threat they are back to nibbling on your garden. So don’t try this one at all.

Another method is to make a spray. The idea here is something that is really stinky and repulsive to a deer but is somewhat tolerable by you since you are going to be around your plants and garden and don’t want to have to smell foul odors so much.

This spray can be made from a mix of garlic, eggs, hot peppers (or hot sauce) and water. Take a few cloves of garlic cut up, 2-3 raw eggs, and 3 tablespoons of hot sauce and mix them together in a blender with water. Add another half gallon of water to make a mixture that can actually be sprayed outside the nozzle of a spray bottle. Let this fester in the hot sun to become really repulsive.

Then simple spray this concoction on the plants and areas the deers tend to be nibbling on.

If after a few days the smell is still pretty strong to you, then you need to make it with more water. If after a few days the deer are back, then you probably need less water OR you need to reapply the mix.

Homemade deer repellents do work but should you use them?

Obviously they are better than a chemical solution so that’s a plus. But the drawback is that this stinky mixture will have to be made over and over and reapplied as needed especially after heavy rains.

Read about the Scarecrow Motion Activated Sprinkler for a simpler solution for deer than this homemade mix.

When deer are in the city, they have to find food. Normally, this food is going to be your vegetable garden or flower bed as they are the most tempting for the deer.

There are lots of fencing methods, netting, and other ways of keeping deer away, but these are quite a pain to set up and maintain.

Liquid repellents can be a better option that these as it’s a way of keeping the deer from eating your plants.

There is specifically a product called Deer Out that is a natural repellent. It works well as it’s a repellent made with a peppermint fresh scent which deer don’t enjoy at all.

What’s good about this repellent as opposed to others is that it can last for 3 months. Other cheaper quality repellents have to be reapplied much more often or wash off easily in the rain.

Since it’s made from natural ingredients it won’t hurt your pets. They may not exactly like the smell but it’s not dangerious like poisonous sprays that target some pests.

So if you want to try something to keep deer from eating your plants, flowers, and fruit trees Deer Out is a quality repellent that will do the trick.

Right when your spring garden is starting to bud and the first plants in your yard are growing, deer start coming up to your fence or even into your yard starting to eat these first spring buds. Not only will they come back for more as they now know it’s a source of food, but will continue to damage your garden, trees, plants, and shrubs causing you problems.

Obviously, this is something you don’t want to deal with and would rather find a deer repellent option to keep the deer away. There are many commercial products available that do the job but many come with disadvantages. The best deer repellent is something effective that doesn’t have to be looked after day after day.

The options today are deer fencing, electric fencing, deer repellent sprays, and motion activated sprinkler systems that spray the deer.

Deer fencing has it’s drawbacks and not just because of the expense. An adult deer can still jump over an object nearly nine feet high so matter what you do to deer proof your yard, they can get in if they really want. When motivated by food, they will find their way in.

Electric fencing is another option. This has the same drawback where a deer can jump over the fence as well as the drawback of shocking other animals like your pets or even your children.

Deer repellent sprays are another common option. While these are effective, most need to be reapplied every 60 days. So one must get used to consistent applications of the product. Most of these don’t do well after a rain or watering. If you are trying to protect your garden, the repellents will wash away after you water which doesn’t really help you repel deer.

One of the best options is the Contech Motion Activated Sprinkler.

No reapplications of the product.

Rain and water doesn’t effect it’s usefulness.

Set it and forget it.

Will scare the deer as well as other animals and pests like rabbits, dogs, cats, birds etc. making it a universal repellent.

Deer cause quite a few problems to your yard and local area when left unchecked. This article isn’t about hunting and population controls in a region but focusing on the problems deer cause and solutions to deer problems.

The most common problem a deer causes are eating your flowers and your garden. Since deer eat quite a diverse diet of leafy greens, nuts, berries, and flowers, most of what you grow in the garden is quite appetizing. In an urban area where there aren’t as many places for a deer to live naturally your plants are their first option. As they become more and more overpopulated in your area this problem will only get worse.

Not only can they ruin your garden but they can also damage your property or even you. It’s rare but deer have been known to damage some fences and in very rare cases actually attack humans especially when they are around their young.

Most people try to some these home deer problems with some sort of fencing or repellents.

The problem with fencing is that deer just jump too high. Even a privacy fence that are normally at least 6 feet high an adult deer can actually leap over it. So the only solution to really have fencing that is going to keep a deer away is one that is quite high which tends to make your property look bad.

One of the better solutions to deer problems are repellents. One can use a mixture of foul smelling repellents putting them on your plants and in your yard, but ultimately you run the risk of you also smelling these nasty smells from the repellent.

Want to know the best solution to deer problems?

A quality repellent is actually water in the form of a motion activated sprinkler. How this works is a deer sets off the motion sensor and is sprayed with a harmless stream of water scaring them away from your plants and garden. It’s the simplest solution to deer.
