Spinning Squirrel Deterrent – Will This Work For Bird Feeders?
One of the common problems that people have with their bird feeders are that squirrels will get into the food. It’s there at such easy access that squirrels can’t resist. At first glance this shouldn’t seem like a problem but it does cause two issues that need to be dealt with.
First of all, the squirrels with this food source will tend to shelter in your home especially your attic which can cause a fire hazard as they chew on cords they shouldn’t be chewing on. You don’t want to provide an animal food that might become a potential danger to your home.
Secondly, the squirrels will scare off the birds. The birds are beneficial for keeping yard and garden pests under control since they will eat them. The more squirrels you have around, the less birds will be in your yard for these benefits.
There are squirrel proof bird feeders, but you might already have a feeder and don’t want to get another. One device is a spinning squirrel deterrent. This device will attach to the bird feeder to help with squirrels.
How this works is that the weight of the squirrel will cause the whole feeder to suddenly spin for about 20 seconds. This will cause the squirrel to jump off and eventually learn to not go near the feeder. Squirrels will not like this sensation and will leave it alone. Birds on the other hand do not weigh enough to cause the feeder to spin.
These devices require no batteries, no chemicals, and works for hanging feeders up to around 10 pounds making it work with most feeders. If yours is too heavy, it will constantly be spinning making it pointless.
The one drawback is that this only works with hanging feeders. There are other squirrel solutions to traditional bird feeders that don’t hang.
