Silverfish Pest Questions – F.A.Q.
A few common questions keep popping up about silverfish pest control that I would like to answer.
What attracts silverfish?
Silverfish are attracted to glues, starches, and wet areas of your home. Glues could include book bindings and wall paper, starches could be from food that is left out, and wet areas are caused by poor leaking plumbing. Keeping a clean kitchen and having good pipes can help prevent the problem in the first place.

Are silverfish dangerous?
No. They won’t bite you. They aren’t really harmful to you or your pets. But something to consider is the danger they pose to your home. Since they are attracted to sticky gluelike substances, they can ruin your walls especially those with wallpaper glue. Then it’s a danger to your budget getting it all fixed.
How to rid silverfish from books?
Since silverfish are attracted to glue, sometimes they get into your book bindings. One thing to do is sprinkle some Diatomaceous Earth around your books or other areas in your home to get rid of them quickly.
What methods of silverfish control are safe for pets?
Start off with something like a citrus spray if worried about products that could effect your pets. These are specifically made for pest control and are completely harmless to pests.
When applying something like Diatomaceous earth, it’s best to do so while your pet isn’t around as it’s very drying and you do not want to get it in their eyes (or your own). Use food grade versions and not pool grade which will poison a pet.

Inside the home, pests of all kinds can cause many different kinds of damage, much of which can go unseen for years. Although you may be treating those you can see quite effectively with store bought pest control products, some can lurk in the shadows or behind the walls themselves for years.
