How To Get Rid Of Bagworms
Bagworms are a tough pest to deal with because by the time you really notice them they are already very problematic and have infested your trees and bushes.
There are a variety of methods of getting rid of bagworms. Some are active and some are preventative.
The most tedious but very effective way of dealing with the bagworm problem is to literally cut the nests off with a knife or shearers. For bushes this is pretty easy because they are close to the ground. For tall trees this becomes a big chore and somewhat dangerous making it almost too difficult for the average person.
Use a spray called Bacillus thuringiensis. This is actually a bacteria that is harmful to the bagworm larvae. The best time to spray this type of substance is in mid to late June. The bagworms are normally still dormant in May. If sprayed too later it’s not as effective.
If later in the year than June get pheromone traps that will attract the males so that they isn’t as much mating to help reduce the population in later years.
A good strategy is to do everything you can to attract birds to the trees and bushes that there are problems. The birds will feed on the bagworms and reduce the population for you naturally.
During the winter spray something called dormant oil spray. This help keeps some of the eggs from hatching the next season.
