Homemade Deer Repellents – Do They Work, Should You Use Them?

So deer are giving your backyard and/or garden a problem and you are looking for a homemade deer repellent solution. But what exactly do you use and what can you make?

One almost “old wives tale” is that deer don’t like loud noises. So some have tried a method of leaving on a radio for days at a time. It appears to work but once the deer realizes there is no threat they are back to nibbling on your garden. So don’t try this one at all.

Another method is to make a spray. The idea here is something that is really stinky and repulsive to a deer but is somewhat tolerable by you since you are going to be around your plants and garden and don’t want to have to smell foul odors so much.

This spray can be made from a mix of garlic, eggs, hot peppers (or hot sauce) and water. Take a few cloves of garlic cut up, 2-3 raw eggs, and 3 tablespoons of hot sauce and mix them together in a blender with water. Add another half gallon of water to make a mixture that can actually be sprayed outside the nozzle of a spray bottle. Let this fester in the hot sun to become really repulsive.

Then simple spray this concoction on the plants and areas the deers tend to be nibbling on.

If after a few days the smell is still pretty strong to you, then you need to make it with more water. If after a few days the deer are back, then you probably need less water OR you need to reapply the mix.

Homemade deer repellents do work but should you use them?

Obviously they are better than a chemical solution so that’s a plus. But the drawback is that this stinky mixture will have to be made over and over and reapplied as needed especially after heavy rains.
