Controlling Aphid Infestations – Don't Let These Get Out Of Control
Aphids are a common garden pest that do almost the most damage to your edible fruits compared to other insects and pests. The problem with aphids is that they can reproduce extremely fast so if you don’t stop them early, it becomes a serious problem.
Controlling aphid infestations.
One of the starting points is to use some form of spray to kill the aphids. Strong pesticides will work but there are two problems with this. One is that your pets or children can come into contact with them. Secondly, it will also kill the insects that eat aphids meaning that if they don’t work properly the aphid problem can be more severe.
There are insecticidal soaps that can target aphids. These are nice since they don’t have a residual effect and are active while wet. You can also mix water, vegetable oil, and a little bit of dish soap to make your own that’s similar.
If you really don’t want to have to deal with aphids year after year, you need to change your strategy. Instead of targeting aphids with a spray you need to attract things that will eat aphids and keep the population under control. Anything that attracts birds to the yard helps alot. Planting plants that get lady bugs to also be in the garden helps since they will eat the aphids.
If you successfully just got rid of aphids in the garden, you need to clean up. Aphids leave a substance behind called honeydew. This is VERY attractive to ants. If you don’t try to clean up your trellises and around the garden, your aphid problem will be replaced by an ant problem.
