Carpenter Ant Identification
If you find ants in your home and aren’t sure if they are carpenter ants, this can help.
Answer these identification questions to find out if it’s a carpenter ant.
Is the ant a much larger ant than you are used to seeing somewhere around 1/2″ to 1″ in size?
Is the ant without wings? Although in the late spring some do have wings.
Is the ant all black or a combination of black and red?
Is the ant found around soft wood or do you notice the would grooves the ant is part of?
Does it have a very narrow waist unlike a termite?
These questions can help identify if it’s a carpenter ant or not. Normally the easiest way to know if it’s a carpenter ant is by the wood shavings. Yes termites can leave similar wood shavings but both need to be exterminated anyways when found.
Carpenter ants are best rid of through baits. Look for baits that they can take back to the rest of the colony and poison the other ants as well as opposed to the ones that only kill the one who finds the bait as this doesn’t solve the issue at hand.
