Rats eat the same foods humans do for the most part. One source of that food is the garbage. Make sure to seal up your garbage if outside or in the garage as tightly as possible. Check your birdseed or any other stored food or pet food in the garage. Rats might also like your compost pile. Any fallen fruits on the ground should be picked up.

Rats do get into pipes in the home as well. One tip to keep these away is every week run warm water down the sink and pour a cup of bleach or a cup of baking soda and vinegar. This will discourage them in your pipes.

Trapping is one of the best ways to get rid of rats. Traps tend to work better because with baits sometimes rats will drag them off to a dark corner to eat them then die causing a horrible smell afterwards through the home.

Rats find food based on smell. The baits need to be things that smell much better than other foods around the house that have quite a strong smell. When they find the trap, it will catch or kill them depending on the trap. At least you will know where the traps are so there won’t be the deathly odor through the house.

As soon as the rats are gone, do everything you can to prevent them from coming back as in the tips listed above.
